A good butcher is happy to make recommendations

It’s all about ingredients but also choosing the best meat at the price. If you can’t run to sirloin, choose a good piece of rump but most of all choose a really good butcher. Here are the ones I use…

1. Allens Butcher
117 Mount Street, London W1K 3LA
Tel: 020 7499 5831

Tucked away in Mayfair (about 5 minutes from Oxford Street), this is a gem of a butcher. Friendly and knowledgeable, they supply meat to many central London restaurants, including my own. They’ll happily break away from prepping 50 steaks to serve you a couple of sirloins and a pork chop.

2. Selfridges
Selfridges London: 400 Oxford Street, London W1A 1AB
Selfridges Manchester Trafford: 1 The Dome, The Trafford Centre, Manchester M17 8DA
Selfridges Manchester Exchange Square, 1 Exchange Square, Central Manchester, M3 1BD
Selfridges Birmingham, Upper Mall East Bullring,
Birmingham B5 4BP.
Tel: 0800 123 400

3. Finding a good butcher on your doorstep
Don’t worry if you’re not near any of my favourite places. Here’s a simple tip. Look for a butcher with a good, well-presented display and friendly, knowledgeable staff whether in a shop or supermarket. Don’t be shy about chatting to the people behind the counter. They’re usually happy to make recommendations.
