How the professionals crush garlic
This is the way I do it

Take the garlic cloves (use as many or as few as you like), crush them quite hard with the back of your knife and then slice finely. Once sliced, add ½ teaspoon of salt to the slices. Using the back of your knife again, mash it into a paste. The salt helps to get the paste really smooth and fine.
